# Custom Attributes

> Add your own fields, such as a grade, a score or course hours, to designs and emails.

A custom attribute is a field that changes from one credential to the next, such as a grade, a score or a completion date. Each one gets a merge tag, for example `[custom_grade]`.

Go to **Settings → Attributes**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Only administrators can manage attributes. Custom attributes depend on your plan.

## How it works

1. **Create an attribute.** It gets a merge tag made from its name, like `[custom_grade]`.
2. **Give each credential a value.** Fill it in as a column of your spreadsheet, or in the form, when you [issue credentials](/docs/tutorials/credential-setup/issuing-credential). You can also change it when you [edit a credential](/docs/tutorials/credential-setup/managing-credentials#edit-a-credential).
3. **Use it in designs and emails.** Put the merge tag in a [design](/docs/tutorials/credential-setup/designing-certificate#add-attributes-and-a-qr-code) or an [email template](/docs/tutorials/customization-and-branding/email-customization). It is replaced with each credential's value.

## Create an attribute

**1. Click New attribute**

**2. Enter a name**

The merge tag is made from the name and can't be changed later.

![The New attribute dialog with the name and the merge tag](https://mintcdn.com/hyperstack/BRB0JNPJFl2Fq7-q/images/attributes-new.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=BRB0JNPJFl2Fq7-q\&q=85\&s=a00ef900975206b6487cd26dd677dcf1)

**3. Click Create attribute**

You can now use it in every design and email template.

> [!TIP]
>
> With the [API](/docs/api-guide/create-credential), send attribute values in `custom_attributes`, with the merge tag name as the key, for example `"custom_grade": "A"`.
