Hackathon certificate templates and badges

A hackathon certificate template gives organisers a ready layout for the moment the clock stops. University coding clubs, schools, tech companies, civic groups and startup hubs run hackathons and ideathons over a day or a weekend, and every team that builds something and demos it to the judges has earned a record of it.
A good certificate names the event, the dates and the person, and says what they did: joined a team, built a prototype against a deadline and pitched it. Many organisers issue a certificate of participation to everyone and a separate award to the winners and the best project in each track, signed by the event lead and the head judge.
The designs here come as certificates in A4 and US Letter and as digital badges that participants can share on LinkedIn or a GitHub profile.
Wording
What to write on a hackathon certificate
Use these lines as they are, or as a start for your own. Every template comes with wording you can change in the studio.
Wording for a hackathon certificate of participation
- “For taking part in our 48-hour hackathon and building a working prototype with your team.”
- “In recognition of your contribution to the build, the demo and the pitch at this year's hackathon.”
- “For turning an idea into a product, from kickoff to the final demo.”
Hackathon certificate wording for winners
- “Awarded to the first place team for the most complete and creative project of the event.”
- “Winner of the Best Use of Open Data track, as chosen by the judging panel.”
- “For the people's choice award, voted by fellow participants on demo day.”
Lines for a youth ideathon certificate
- “For bringing a bold idea to life and presenting it with confidence to the panel.”
- “In recognition of creative thinking, teamwork and problem solving at our student ideathon.”

FAQ
Questions, answered
A hackathon certificate records that the person built something, usually a working prototype or code, within the event's time limit. An ideathon certificate records that they developed and pitched an idea, often as a slide deck or a business model, without building it. Schools and youth programs run ideathons more often, so the wording talks about ideas, teamwork and presenting.
Most organisers give a certificate of participation to everyone who stayed to the end and demoed, because the work is the same for every team. Winners and track prizes then get a second, separate award, so the participation record stays fair and the prize still stands out.
Yes, when you have them. The participant's name, the event and its dates come first, then a line on what they did. Adding the team or project name and any track or theme (for example health tech or open data) makes the certificate a real record of the weekend, and gives recruiters something to look up.
Yes. The usual pair is the hackathon director or lead organiser and the head judge. A representative of the host or the main sponsor can sign too. For a school or university event, a teacher, the club's faculty advisor or the head of department often signs.
Send them within a day or two of the closing ceremony, while the event is still on people's feeds. Participants who post about the weekend that week want a certificate and a badge to share alongside their project link.
