Hyperstack connects to Canvas through LTI 1.3. A Canvas admin adds Hyperstack once; teachers then add a Hyperstack item to a course and choose a credential group. When a student opens the item, Hyperstack issues the group’s credential to their Canvas email.
Canvas retires LTI 1.1 in December 2027. If you set up Hyperstack with LTI 1.1 before, see Move from LTI 1.1.

Before you start

  • A credential group with its design.
  • Administrator access in Hyperstack.
  • A Canvas admin who can manage developer keys.

Step 1: create a developer key in Canvas

In Hyperstack, open the Canvas setup page

Click Add integration, then Canvas, then Integrate. The page opens on LTI 1.3. Copy the JSON URL.

In Canvas, go to Admin, your account, Developer Keys

Click + Developer Key, then LTI Key.

Set Method to Enter URL and paste the JSON URL

Name the key Hyperstack and click Save.

Turn the key ON

Copy the number in the Details column: that is the Client ID.
Prefer one step? On the Canvas setup page, open Or use LTI Registration (Dynamic Registration) and paste that URL in Canvas under + Developer Key, LTI Registration. Canvas creates the key and connects it to your organization.

Step 2: install the app in Canvas

Go to Admin, your account, Settings, Apps, View App Configurations. Click + App, set Configuration Type to By Client ID, paste the Client ID, click Submit, then Install.

Step 3: connect the key to Hyperstack

Either way works:
  • Paste the Client ID on the Canvas setup page and click Connect.
  • Or click Make connection code (a code like K7QM-4XPA, valid 30 minutes). Then open a Hyperstack item in Canvas as a Canvas admin and type the code when asked.

Step 4: add Hyperstack to a course

  1. In the course, open Modules, click + and choose External Tool.
  2. Pick Hyperstack. Hyperstack shows your credential groups: choose one and click Add to course, then Add Item in Canvas.
  3. Use module requirements so the item opens only after the student completes the course. Put it at the end of the last module.
To change the group later, open the item as a teacher and click Change.

Who gets a credential

Test with a student account (or your LMS’s “act as user”). Teacher and admin accounts never get a credential, and preview modes such as Canvas Student View have no real email.

What learners see

  • Well done: their credential is ready, with View my credential. It is published at once and emailed to them. Opening the item again shows the same credential, never a second one.
  • Email address needed: the LMS didn’t share their email, so nothing was issued. Ask your LMS admin to share names and emails with Hyperstack.
  • Not set up yet: the item isn’t linked to a credential group. A teacher opens it and picks one.

Move from LTI 1.1

  1. Set up LTI 1.3 (steps 1 to 3) in the same Canvas account as your LTI 1.1 app.
  2. Canvas moves your existing Hyperstack items to LTI 1.3, because both use the same Hyperstack address. Items you linked under LTI 1.1 keep their credential groups.
  3. Open one moved item as a student to check, then delete the old LTI 1.1 app in Canvas (Settings, Apps, the old Hyperstack app, Delete).
The LTI 1.1 keys stay on the LTI 1.1 tab of the Canvas setup page until then. What changes with the move: teachers pick the group when they add the item, and teaching assistants and observers no longer get credentials.
